Latin Movies Join Sundance Film Festival

There are many people in and around Hollywood who suggest that Latino voices are not prominently represented in modern films and that many representations of Latinos in films and television series are cliché and aren’t described from the perspective of someone who has lived in that environment. This is something that some filmmakers are looking to change as there are quite a few entries this year into the Sundance Film Festival which detail Latino life as seen by filmmakers who know what they’re talking about when they make a Latino themed feature film.

One such film is called “Mosquita y Mari” and is an entry into the festival by director Aurora Guerrerro and is the first feature film from that director. The movie is entered into the category in the festival that is designed to showcase new and upcoming filmmakers and their movies. Many of the winners of this category go on to successful film careers and see much popularity on movie fan sites like Channel131 and others like it. It is hoped by many in the Latino community that Guerrerro’s film will make people take notice of more Latino filmmakers in the future.

And getting into the film festival itself is quite an amazing feat as there are over twelve thousand films offered up each year to the festival with only two percent of those films being accepted into final screenings at the festival itself in Utah in January. There have been many efforts recently to enhance the number of entries from both Latino themed films and American Indian films.
