A Commentary On “While My Son Serves in Iraq”

Leslee,

A very moving letter. Thank you for sharing. I was instantly brought back to the day our son took his oath and become a Marine officer. By chance, I took a picture of him after we pinned his bars on, and in the background, on the wall, was the very quote by Reagan that you mention. It is my favorite picture of him.

I am honored to be an American, like you, who has a loved one who has dared to risk all for our freedom. James’ boots are on the ground in Helmand Province. We think of, and pray for, him everyday. I can only write to you that the feelings you will have when your james franco brother gets there will be very real. I can only suggest that you keep the honor of it first, and the concern about it second. In this way we honor their choice. Thanks to your brother, you, and your entire family for serving this beloved country.

Gregg
