According to the US version of the China Daily newspaper, while the US economy has been slow in recovering, the state of Hawaii is improving its lot by attracting Chinese tourists.  Hawaii Tourism Authority’s figures suggest Chinese tourists are boosting the Hawaiian travel industry.   According to the report, visitors from China have been increasing year over year since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in 2007 between the US and China, which made travel easier for groups and leisure tourists.  During 2011, tourism official expect 91,000 Chinese visitors to arrive in Hawaii, a 37 percent over 2010.  In 2010 alone, expenditures associated with travel from China reached $129 million.

Hawaii tourism officials are working with local universities and colleges to give tourism workers training in Chinese language, culture, protocol and customs. The program is meant to make such workers better at welcoming Chinese visitors to Hawaii. To date, more than 2,000 service workers have taken part in the program.

Beside the initiatives from the State of Hawaii and local industry leaders, Hawaii is a natural fit for Chinese tourists as has been Hawaii for Japanese tourists.  There are a lot of people and businesses with historical and cultural ties to China.  Many residents had parents and grandparents whom originally immigrated from China.
